Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaveda

(1814-1873)

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaveda was born in Cuba in 1814, and moved to Spain as a young woman, where she married and was widowed. Her second husband died while they were living in Cuba, after which she decided to return to Spain via the United States, where she visited Niagara Falls and wrote this poem.
